  • Summary: The traditional urban balcony of Spanish economic housing is becoming a flexible and perfectable space?2, capable of decongesting a reduced home by taking on new uses and acting as a climate regulator. We propose to make a reading of the use of these intermediate spaces in four projects carried out by Amann-Canovas-Maruri where, with different qualities, this area is used as an interface between the domestic space and the city. The qualities of these intermediate spaces are historically related to concepts that have traditionally given them its name: solarium, gazebo, gallery, balcony, loggia, umbráculo, porch, terrace, veranda and patio3. Today, the properties of new spaces often respond to complex and diverse situations that are difficult to adjust to a single term.
  • Abstract: The traditional urban balcony of the Spanish economic housing is becoming a «space without a name» 2 flexible and perfectible, capable of decongesting a reduced house by assuming new and acting as a «climatic regulator». We propose to make a reading of the use of these intermediate spaces in four projects carried out by Amann-Canovas-Maruri where, with different qualities, this area is used as an interface between the domestic space and the city. The qualities of these intermediate spaces are historically related to concepts that have traditionally given their name: solarium, gazebo, gallery, balcony, loggia, sunshade, porch, terrace, veranda and patio3. At present, the properties of the new spaces tend to respond to complex and diverse situations difficult to adjust to a single term.
