  • Abstract: In 1919 the newspaper announced a competition for the design of the social institution Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. One of the most important and polemical competitions of the period, its development and subsequent benefits are, as it were, a cultural synthesis, mirror and window of the all too often dual and shared Spanish society.

The Russian Ballets were on the marquee at that time, the image of an amazing time period for Madrid in much the same way as the nascent seat of Círculo de Bellas Artes; both swan songs of a brilliant period known in Spain as the “Silver Age.”
