The dissolution of the architectural : tours of the dOCUMENTA (2016)

TESIS: (Thesis)

Title: The dissolution of the architectural: tours of the Documenta.

  • Author(s): Purification Butiste Villanueva.
  • Director (thesis director/s): Atxu Amann Alcocer.
  • Summary: The curator of the latest edition of Kassel’s documenta in 2012, Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, summarized her exhibition approach with the concept of «having no concept». This positioning can be interpreted as a contradiction or as a willingness to overcome the discursive framework. Understanding the materialization of this proposition in dOCUMENTA (13) is a journey to the center of the individual, built around the need to be or have a voice, and the yearning not to be or avoid exhausting himself in that voice. DOCUMENTA (13) assumes the collapse of Western civilization and is proposed as a space to foster the event of its recovery. The place itself acquires metaphysical dimensions; between the beginning and the end of existence. This territory can be explored from the visitor’s experience or from the idea of the event organizers. To better understand each other, the user’s interpretation unfolds, in what is immediately perceived and what is thought after. The first tour is the extra-body aesthetic experience of a non-individual. The second way is the invention of a subject who contemplates how the being who inhabits a rational world disappears into a specular world and tries to find himself at home. The last itinerary is the expression of the dOCUMENTA (13). What it says of itself is the justification of the curatorial team; what he feels is the overcoming of his speech in the body of the writer Vila-Matas; what he finds in his memory.
  • Abstract: The commissioner of the 2012 edition of dOCUMENTA in Kassel, Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, summed up her approach to having exhibitwith the concept of «not a concept». This standpoint could be viewed as a contradiction or as evidence of the will to overcome the discursive framework. Understanding the materialisation of this proposition at dOCUMENTA (13) is a journey to the centre of the individual, built around the need to be or to have a voice, and the desire to not be or to avoid exhausting oneself in that voice. The collapse of Western civilization serves as a starting point for dOCUMENTA (13), and the exhibition is conceived as a space for promoting its recovery. The venue itself acquires metaphysical dimensions; the boundary between the beginning and the end of existence. The exhibition can be viewed from different standpoints: through the experience of the visitor or through the idea of the organisers of the event, whilst a personal visit unfolds to provide a deeper understanding; that which is perceived immediately and that which is unveiled through subsequent reflection. The first viewpoint represents the aesthetic, extracorporeal experience of a non-individual. The second is the invention of a subject that contemplates how the being that inhabits the rational world disappears into the world of reflections and tries to return to the origin. The final itinerary is the expression of dOCUMENTA (13) itself. What it says of itself is the justification of the curatorial team; what it feels is the surpassing of its discourse in the body of the writer Vila-Matas; what it can be found in its memory.
