  • Summary: Rem Koolhaas stands for controversy, complexity, intellectual avant-garde and constant transformation. His media influence is indisputable, instilling more and more an ego that shuns and instrumentalizes success equally. For example, it denies the figure of the star architect while protesting bitterly because only on 13 occasions in history have the architects been the cover of the prestigious magazine Time, the last time being in 1971[1]. On paper, it is the most opposite of the common and/or generic that exists today in the world of architecture. However, in recent years, his speech has turned from the zone-congestion 1 to the ?intermediate space? 2, from graphical-fog 3 and conceptual to the pursuit of the fundamental, the essential; from the pre-action to preservation research; from the most specific, to defining the generic. In this article we intend to demonstrate that, what might seem like a contradiction from an external perspective, is but a coherent step within the intellectual evolution of its theoretical construct, in which there are a number of notable continuities, such as: understanding architecture as a consumer object? of the critical mass, the need for ?visibility? of the architectural product, the extrapolation of cultural and social phenomena to architecture and the undisputed assumption of dependence on external conditions.

  • Abstract: Rem Koolhaas is synonymous with controversy, complexity, intellectual vanguard and constant transformation. His media influence is indisputable, inflating more and more an ego that shuns and exploits success equally. For example, he denies the figure of the star architect while protesting bitterly because only on 13 occasions in history have the architects been on the cover of the prestigious magazine Time, being the last time in 1971[1]. On paper, it is the most opposite to the common and / or generic that exists today in the world of architecture. However, in recent years, his speech has shifted from urban hyper-congestion 1 to intermediate space? 2, of the hyper-density graphic 3 and conceptual to the search of the fundamental, the essential; from hyper action to research on preservation; from the most specific, to define the generic. In this article we intend to demonstrate that, what might seem a contradiction from an external perspective, is nothing more than a coherent step within the intellectual evolution of its theoretical construct, in which there are a series of continuities, such as as: understanding of architecture as a? consumer object? of critical mass, the need for? visibility? of the architectural product, the extrapolation of cultural and social phenomena to architecture and the incontestable assumption of dependence on external conditions.
