  • Summary: Based on the anthropological significance of the «game» in huizinga and Cadamer’s studies, this study analyses some significant paradigms of playful manifestations in the city’s spaces, from palestras and gymnasios in the city old to the new leisure spaces in the modern city. The objective of this work is to study the both ideological and psychological bases of the creation of playful spaces and their connection with different social and artistic sensitivities. Without pretending to be exhaustive, the study of different typologies through these paradigms allows us to reveal some important keys in the search for innovative solutions that respond to the contemporary problems of the city. In this sense, the value of leisure time and proximity to nature in Greek paideia or criticism of the entertainment industry and the heir-to-baroque show or the recovery of situationist «drift» could prove uplifting for reflection on a new urban paradigm with recreational foundations that integrate into a new concept of city with ecological criteria and sustainability whose protagonists are the citizens themselves. Active participation and citizen initiative are the keys of the new emerging paradigm in the form of urban actions or reuse of degraded and abandoned spaces as play spaces.
